Our guide to moisture proof plasterboard

At Belgrade, we stock a variety of high performance plasterboard to combat damp in your building. Available in a range of sizes and thicknesses, and suitable for any surface in a property, this versatile product will help to protect your building from moisture damage.

What is moisture resistant plasterboard?

This type of plasterboard consists of an aerated gypsum core, and gets its water resistant properties from water-repellent additives encased in the core and paper liners. While not completely waterproof, it is resistant to damp atmospheres that you may find in a bathroom, kitchen or utility room.

Benefits of water resistant plasterboard

  • Durability: Although you can’t expect this product to be completely waterproof, our water resistant plasterboard protects against water damage and deterioration, meaning your walls will hold up better and for longer.
  • Mould resistance: This product also limits mould growth due to its moisture-barrier properties. This in turn creates better air quality in a property, reducing the risk of mould-related health issues such as allergies.
  • Cost-effective: Plasterboard is generally a cost effective material to create smooth walls in your property, but moisture-resistant plasterboard goes the extra mile – its durability and resistance to water damage can save you money on repairs for years to come.
  • Smooth finish: Our plasterboard provides a smooth surface for decorating, plastering or tiling even in damp conditions – ideal for bathrooms and kitchens.

FAQs

Can you tile on moisture resistant plasterboard?

Yes, but you need to make sure that your plasterboard is in good condition and strong enough to support the weight of the tiles. We recommend fitting new plasterboard before tiling, to ensure it’s in the best possible condition – prolonging the life of the walls in your property. Some boards, such as Gyproc moisture resistant plasterboard, are even suitable for tiling with no pre-treatment.

Is moisture resistant plasterboard worth it?

We certainly think so! Damp, moisture and humidity can cause damage to surfaces in a property, and can be particularly troublesome in rooms with tiled walls. Any imperfection in the tiling can lead to damp penetrating the walls, which can be costly to repair. So, your plasterboard will provide an easy and cost effective barrier, helping to reduce damage.

Can you plaster on moisture resistant plasterboard?

Yes – you can paint, plaster, tile or decorate your plasterboard after fitting it, in the same way as with standard plasterboard. However, when skimming your plasterboard, it is often recommended that the surface is prepared with a bonding agent. We’d recommend following the manufacturers instructions, or if you’re unsure get in touch – we’ll be happy to advise.
