Tyvek® FireCurb® breather membrane: a flame-retardant lightweight membrane based on DuPont™ patented technology, enabling reaction to fire classification of Euroclass B-s1,d0 (EN 13501-1) suited for fire risk averse installations, high-rise and higher risk buildings, self-extinguishes when ignited. It uses a halogen-free flame-retardant coating to reduce the formation of droplets and smoke with minimal environmental impact.

Description

DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb® breather membrane which inherited prominent properties of Tyvek® brand, being vapour-open, watertight, and durable, with added flame retardancy properties that could significantly increase building safety. Suitable for use in all building types, from low-rise, high-rise to higher risk buildings, Tyvek® FireCurb® breather membrane offers an outstanding fire rated weatherproofing solution you can trust.

When considering standardised testing and classification criteria for construction products through the EN 13501-1, classes are described by letters. The first letter gives a classification based on the combustibility and contribution to fire: A1 and A2 is non-combustible, B till E go from very limited to medium contribution to fire, and F means high contribution and easily flammable.

In addition, EN 13501-1 determines, development of smoke and severity of burning droplets falling off the material. The best possible class being s1 for no/hardly any smoke and d0 for no-droplets. Hence, a product can be said to perform to for e.g.  class B-s1,d0 or class A2-s1,d0 and so forth and so on. Different test regimes of EN 13501-1 standard apply to different classes, for more details, please take specialists advice.

DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb® breather membrane lightweight (with 68 g/m² mass per unit area to EN 1849-2), fire retardant performing to Euroclass B-s1,d0 (EN 13501-1) is a membrane that self-extinguishes when subject to flame. It uses a halogen-free flame-retardant coating to reduce the formation of smoke (s1 – smoke emissions absent or very little) and droplets (d0 – no burning droplets) with minimal environmental impact. Holds independently verified documentation on environmental credentials – environmental product declaration (EPD).

Fixed to masonry: Tyvek® FireCurb® may be fixed to masonry with a suitable anchor fixing system or a masonry nail/screw and EPDM rubber washer. Fixings should be at maximum 500mm centres. Tyvek® Butyl Tape (double sided) may be used to fix the membrane in addition to the mechanical methods suggested above. A Primer can be applied to chalky or porous masonry to seal the surface and improve adhesion before applying dhesive tape.

Fixing – to steelwork (SFS): Initial (temporary) fixing of Tyvek® FireCurb® may be made with continuous strips of Tyvek® Double Sided (acrylic) Tape. These should be supplemented with mechanical fixings through to the steel structure, where suitable drill-tip or self tapping screws may be used. The screws must sit flush (not countersunk) and a rubber or EPDM washer should sit between the screw heads and the membrane to avoid water ingress. Screw fixings should be spaced vertically at 500mm centres on every stud (typically spaced at 600mm horizontal centres).

Overlaps taped using: DuPont™ Tyvek® Acrylic Tape (75 mm). Tape is fitted externally (over the membrane) and provides visual aid to oversee installation quality. All horizontal membrane laps should be 100mm minimum. Vertical membrane laps should be 150mm minimum.

Overlaps sandwiched using: DuPont™ Tyvek® Double-sided Tape (50 mm). Double sided tape requires fiduciary responsibility by installer and degree of discretionary trust in workmanship that installation shall be carried out under duty of care, whereas tape is installed by ‘sandwiching’ it between the layers of membrane, limiting or depriving QS of ability to carry out visual inspection following installation.

Usage of adhesive tapes fall under exemption: Adhesive tapes used to seal Tyvek® FireCurb™ breather membrane fall under exemption regarding fire classification requirements (please follow the link for more information – Approved Document B (fire safety) volume 1: Dwellings, 2019 edition, on page 77) – please refer to sub paragraph (h) – seals, gaskets, fixings, sealants and backer rods. This suggest that there is no prescriptive regulative requirement at the moment imposing fire classification applicable to tapes.
